Who makes Smugshot
Mathias Tønder, through his company MT Consult, in Denmark. Website: mt-consult.dk. LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/mathiastonder. Mail: hello@smugshot.io. The code is public at github.com/pjalle/smugshot-app, so you can check every claim below yourself.
The app
Smugshot never goes online. It has no account, no analytics, no crash reports and no server of ours. "Check for updates" only opens smugshot.io in your browser; the app itself never connects to anything. The code is public, so you can check that for yourself.
A smugshot is two pictures and a small text file, written to a folder on your own disk (~/.smugshots unless you choose another). The text file names the app and window you pointed at and, on the Mac, what was under the pointer. Each smugshot deletes itself after a day unless you set another time, from one minute to forever. What you then paste into an AI agent goes wherever that agent sends it; that is between you and the agent.
On the Mac, Smugshot asks for the Screen Recording permission to take the picture and the Accessibility permission to read what is under the pointer and, if you switch that on, to paste for you. It uses them for nothing else.
This website
smugshot.io sets no cookies and runs no script in your browser. It counts how many people see the front page and how many download, and keeps for each: what was fetched, whether the visitor's system was Mac, Windows, Linux or other, the country, the site the visitor came from, and whether the request looked like a bot. No IP address and no browser details are kept. The totals are open to anyone at smugshot.io/stats.
The site and the downloads are served by Cloudflare, which handles the requests in passing the way any host does. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
If you write to hello@smugshot.io, we keep the mail for as long as it takes to answer you and remember what was said. We never pass it on.
Terms
- Smugshot is free. If one day there is a price, it will be a small one-time payment, never a subscription, and what you already have keeps working.
- It comes as it is, with no warranty of any kind. Use it at your own risk. We are not liable for anything that follows from using it, as far as the law allows. The Windows and Linux versions are early and say so.
- The source code is under the Functional Source License; the Claude Code skill and the shot.md format are under the MIT licence. Those licences say what you may do with the code. Using the app needs no licence key and no agreement beyond this page.
- We may change or stop offering Smugshot or this site at any time. Copies you already have are yours to keep.
- Danish law applies.
